Which tenure cohorts deserve a separate churn lens

Not every month-by-month slice earns equal attention. Focus on the tenure bands where behaviour genuinely shifts.

Wall of sticky notes in a planning session

Application analytics for subscriptions often produce dozens of cohort charts. The noise makes it harder to see the few tenure bands where subscribers change how they use the product.

In practice we look first at the trial-to-paid handoff, the first renewal, and the anniversary of annual plans. Those moments carry different expectations and different cancellation scripts.

Mid-tenure silence is another useful band. Subscribers who stop opening key features yet keep paying are easy to miss until they cancel in a cluster after a billing surprise.

Choose bands that your team can act on within a quarter. A diagnostic that names twelve cohorts without a next step for each one rarely moves beyond the slide deck.
